Growing up as a Baby Boomer was comforting. the time I got to college I realized I would always be part of this huge sea of people living and working and playing - and aging - together.
And by virtue of the sheer numbers involved, we would rule. As long as I lived. The culture, market forces, fashion, music, everything would spin around Baby Boomers, their wants and needs.

I do agree there is a cultural age gap waiting to be filled. I would love to see more films like “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Apollo 13″ and “Field of Dreams” and “Shakespeare in Love” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Big Chill.” Oh, yes, and “Animal House.”

NEW YORK — A female pit bull living at a Long Island animal shelter needs donations of Viagra to stay alive, according to a spokesperson of the Little Shelter Animal Adoption Center.
Ingrid, 4, was rescued in April after being near death from heartworms, according to Marge Stein, a spokesperson for the shelter.
The shelter sought a vet who suggested giving Viagra a try to keep the dog’s blood vessels open.
“We were really worried she wouldn’t make it,” Stein said during a phone interview with WNBC.com. “There was such a turnaround after or week or so of the Viagra; she just became a new dog. She perked up and was lively, just like any other dog.”
The Adoption Center is now seeking Viagra donations from people in the area to keep Ingrid alive. Stein said the shelter cannot afford to continually pay $10 for each Viagra pill.

Laboratory studies conducted at Queen’s University, Belfast, U.K. suggest that taking the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may adversely affect sperm function and possibly male fertility.
The investigators say that recreational users of Viagra need to be informed of its potentially harmful effects on sperm function. In their experiments, Dr. David R. J. Glenn and colleagues observed that exposure ofcultured sperm to Viagra, compared to no exposure, led to a ’sustained enhancement of motility’ both in numbers of progressively motile sperm and their velocity.
However, exposure to Viagra - at concentrations equivalent to the average maximum total blood concentration present 30 minutes after a single oral dose of 100 milligrams - also caused premature changes to sperms affecting their ability to penetrate the egg’s membrane.

Researchers say they’ve moved much closer to untangling the genetic threads that raise a woman’s chance for breast cancer.
A set of studies published recently in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics identified four new breast cancer susceptibility genes, as well as several genetic markers, that are associated with the risk for the disease and that deserve further investigation. The findings may be the most important genetic discoveries relating to breast cancer genetics since the identification of the BRCA1 and BRCA 2 susceptibility mutations in 1994, experts say.

Government officials are warning people to throw away a contact lens solution after an investigation linked it to a rare eye infection.
The warning concerns AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, used for cleaning and storing soft contact lenses, said a spokeswoman for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The solution seems to be a factor in cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a painful eye infection that can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. The solution is made by Advanced Medical Optics Inc., a publicly traded company based in Santa Ana, California. The company had said that it is voluntarily recalling the product.

First in line in the low-female-sex-drive-sweepstakes is a drug called flibanserin(Boehringher-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals) which is currently in “phase III” clinical trials (that’s the final phase of drug testing required by the Food and Drug Administration). Although in phase III, Boehringher-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals is keeping a tight lid on flibanserin. Some critics say the drug is actually an anti-depressant. It’s effects on the female libido are being closely guarded (BusinessWeek, Jan. 8, 2007).
Meanwhile, another drug — called bremelanotide — is in development as well, one that webmd.com reports is supposed to cure low female sex drive and male erectile dysfunction at the same time. Both potential uses are being tested in “phase II” clinical trials, which are early studies required by the FDA to assess how well a drug works and how safe it is.
According to press release from Palatin Technologies — the company researching bremelanotide — the drug is administered in the form of a nasal spray, and it acts on the central nervous system, stimulating a region of the brain called the hypothalamus, which is known to be involved in sexual arousal in both men and women.
Seems pretty cut and dried: a type of female Viagra that impacts a woman’s state of arousal and increase her desire. But critics say it’s not quite that simple.
Researchers at the Dartmouth Medical School point out that — technically speaking — arousal and desire are not the same thing. Arousal is the physical and psychological state of being primed for sex (i.e. the penis becomes erect, the vagina lubricates, heart rate increases, and blood vessels dilate). But experts says the lines of “sexual desire” are a bit blurry. It can’t specifically be “seen” and has to do with wanting to become aroused.

Other critics feel that the root of “sexual desire” is less a medical issue and more a psychological one. Another study carried out by the Kinsey Institute came up with even lower numbers (7%).
So the jury is still out. A more realistic assessment of the two drugs will happen when and if either finally gets FDA approval.
Bottom line: If these libido drugs don’t do anything for women, they won’t take them — regardless of how much money is spent on marketing and publicity.

Sydney, June 2 : A NSW oyster farmer is attempting to chemically enhance the aphrodisiacal qualities of his oysters, by feeding them Viagra.
George May started feeding his oysters with the anti-impotence drug in order to export it to the overseas market.
The 59-year-old came up with the idea of feeding Viagra to oysters after he underwent surgery for prostate cancer.
May claims tests have proven the oysters show trace elements of sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra.
May has registered his product as ‘Viagra Oysters’, and estimates that it could be worth 300 million dollars.
But his use of the Viagra trademark in his marketing has drawn the fury of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and state food authorities.
Law firm Baker & McKenzie, acting on behalf of Pfizer, has threatened legal action if the farmers don’t deregister the business name.
Food Safety NSW says that May’s accomplishment is against the law and breaches the NSW shellfish program under the food act.
